Always feel knee pain, is it rheumatism? What should I do?

Questioner

Dr. Yuan hello, I love running very much at ordinary times. I have been in good health for many years, but my knees have been painful for nearly a week or two.

At present, the main problem is that the knee is very painful when running, especially the right knee, and occasionally there is a dull pain when you don’t exercise at ordinary times, but most of the time it is fine as long as you don’t move.

I thought I would get better after a few days of rest, but I have had a rest for about two weeks and still feel a little painful. Is this the situation in what? Do I have rheumatism?

Shanghai Oriental Hospital

There are several possibilities for knee joint pain, but from your description, it is not rheumatism.

1. May be knee meniscus injury

Generally, there are obvious trauma, but sometimes it may not be obvious, such as casual sprain during running.

For meniscus injury, it is generally necessary to rest and have a look first. If it is serious, arthroscopic surgery is required.

2. Possible bone contusion

Running too much often leads to knee joint [bone contusion], causing bone marrow edema.

For this kind of situation, it is recommended to run as little as possible, and generally avoid running for 1 ~ 3 months.

3. Synovial problems of knee joint

Synovitis and synovial hyperplasia of the knee joint can also lead to pain of the knee joint.

4. Other injuries

Such as ligament injury.

According to your symptoms, the most likely situation is the first three. Ligament injury is not very consistent with your symptoms.

If it is not good for a long time, I suggest you go to the hospital and have another MRI of the knee joint, because MRI can observe soft tissues more clearly.

At present, the conservative treatment method is to take oral drugs to relieve pain, such as non-steroidal drug Ankangxin. Of course, sodium hyaluronate can also be injected into the knee joint. This depends on the situation. It is recommended to find a local orthopaedic doctor to have a face-to-face look.

The most important thing is to stop running, stop all weight-bearing exercises, and don’t walk too much. It is best to stay in bed more and resume exercise slowly after the pain is completely relieved.
