These characteristics of newborns are normal, and improper handling is harmful.

Ordinary people do not have many chances to see newborn children all their lives. As parents, they may regard the physiological phenomena of some newborns as some abnormal diseases and do some improper treatment, causing harm to children. This phenomenon is very common in remote and backward areas. The following are some physiological phenomena that are often misjudged.

1. Fetal fat: At birth, the skin of full-term children is covered with a layer of white sebum. This kind of fetal fat has the function of protecting the skin and will gradually fall off and disappear naturally after birth. It does not need to be cleaned specially, and it cannot be scraped off with hard objects to avoid damaging the skin.

2. Sebaceous gland hyperplasia: Affected by maternal sex hormones, proliferative sebaceous glands can be seen on the forehead, nose, upper lip, cheeks and other places of newborns, which are more than gradually shrink and fade within a few weeks after birth. Can’t squeeze, otherwise it is easy to induce infection.

3. Miliary rash: It is a small white cyst on the skin surface, with a diameter of 1-2mm. It contains multi-layer keratinizing substances. It is mostly found on the face and can appear at all ages. However, newborns are more common. Most of them can fade away on their own without treatment. If older children do not fade away continuously, doctors can pick out and expel the contents.

4. Horse teeth or die teeth: similar in nature to miliary rash, except that they are located in the center of gums or palates. Most of them can fall off by themselves without special treatment. There is a folk custom of “picking horse teeth”, which is easy to cause infection and should be disdained.

5. Mongolian spots: The newborn baby has some cyan spots on the trunk, buttocks and limbs, which are easy to occur in the East and are caused by special pigment cell deposition. Most of them will gradually recede within one year old. In foreign countries, bruises caused by domestic violence are mistaken.

6. Newborn hair: When the newborn is born, there are many hairs on the whole body, and the back is obvious, which is called hair, and it will gradually fall off naturally. In some places, it is customary to shave hair, which is called “pig hair wind”. It is also easy for the child’s skin and hair follicles to be damaged, leading to infection and even the risk of septicemia.

7. Mantis mouth: There are raised fat pads on both cheeks of the newborn, which are conducive to sucking milk and should not be broken to avoid infection.

8. Breast enlargement: Affected by maternal hormones, breast enlargement and even a small amount of lactation in some newborns are normal. Squeezing breast may lead to infection and even bacteremia.

9. Vaginal bleeding: Also due to the influence of maternal hormones, the estrogen level of the child drops rapidly after birth, and the uterine mucosa loses the function of estrogen, thus falling off and bleeding, also known as [false menstruation]. This is a short-term phenomenon after birth. If the amount of bleeding is relatively large or lasts for a long time, then you need to find a doctor to check if there are any other problems.

In view of the recent treatment of some children with breast infection of newborns, I write this article, hoping that novice parents and elders can understand the normal phenomena of these newborns, get rid of bad habits, and do not let children suffer avoidable injuries.
