BMJ says surgeons are more handsome than physicians? Argue against it!

In recent days, there is a very popular article in my circle of friends. The article to the effect that the famous medical journal BMJ once published a research report. The report pointed out that after a small study, it was found that:

Why are surgeons more handsome than physicians …:)

Of course, most of the people who forwarded this article were surgeons (including me).

The article is published by BMJ, one of the four major medical journals, and its research methods are naturally subject to strict examination. Let’s look at what this circle of friends article says.

How to prove [surgery is better than internal medicine]?

How does this article in BMJ prove the argument that surgeons are more handsome than physicians? Let’s look at its research method:

Subjects:

Twelve senior surgeons, 12 senior physicians and 4 controls (actors who play doctors in the movie) from the Affiliated Hospital of the University of Barcelona in Spain. The 28 men were randomly selected and matched by age (about 50 years old) and sex (both male). The surgeons and physicians were matched one by one.

Research methods:

The study selected 8 (yes, only 8) women to form an independent evaluation team. Three of the 8 women were doctors and the remaining 5 were nurses. They were responsible for scoring the 12 groups of participants with a score range of 1-7 points, of which 1 point was the ugliest, and 7 points could be considered to be good-looking and flying.

In the scoring process, some epidemiological control measures were adopted, such as removing extreme values, taking the middle six scores for average calculation, etc., and then the 95% confidence interval was calculated very carefully… In short, the statistical method is scientific and rigorous.

Results:

Age: flat, surgeon average 51.1 years old, physician average 50.6 years old;

Height: Surgery wins, surgeon’s average height is 179.4, physician’s average height is 172.6;

Yan Value: Surgery wins. The average handsome score of surgeons is 4.39 and that of physicians is 3.65.

What is even more pitiful is… they found that among physicians, bald heads are more likely. The doctors played by movie actors scored higher than the above two groups in all aspects.

From left to right are

Conclusion:

Surgeons are taller and more handsome than physicians. However, the doctors played by movie stars beat the above two groups. The specific reason is unknown. (Editor’s Note: This is not nonsense …)

However…

I agree with the argument of this article subjectively. However, I am also a curious and idealistic (and handsome) surgeon. Naturally, I did not hesitate to dig out the original text and study it carefully. If you settle down to read the original text of this document (and other articles quoting it), you need to ask yourself these questions when reading:

Why is the total sample size only 28? Why only study senior doctors? The score is only based on photos, but the quality control of photos is not done by the research team. Is there any problem? Only 8 women took part in the scoring, and they were in the same hospital. Maybe there was Couple in it? …… Ah, different.

If you look at it more carefully, you will be even more ironic. Look at these unreliable conclusions and analyses:

Senior surgeons are often surrounded by junior doctors, interns, nurses, anesthesiologists and other personnel. Their height and appearance make them easily recognized as leaders.

On the contrary, physicians have very few contacts. They are either beside the patient’s bed or in the office. Physicians always wear stethoscopes around their necks, which causes their heads to bend forward slightly and reduce their height. They have to read a large number of medical magazines to update their knowledge. A large amount of overloaded knowledge will also make them look older.

There is also this:

Surgeons stay in the operating room for a long time, The physician stayed in the ward for a long time, The operating room is cleaner and cooler than the general ward. In addition, surgeons often wear surgical masks, which act as a barrier to the face and may also be an effective anti-aging device (this needs further research). Surgeons are less bald, which may be related to environmental factors and the role of surgical caps.

Yes! Identification is complete! This is serious nonsense!

Although it is an objective fact that physicians are a little low in height, baldness, masks, stethoscopes and reading medical literature are all what ghosts.

Eggs are hidden in the original text. Friends who do not read the original text will miss these jokes:

Although it is an objective criterion to evaluate a person’s appearance, the criterion for judging a person’s appearance will also change with it, only the queen (queen? Yes, the Queen) can judge others by a unique standard.

That is: Magic Mirror, Magic Mirror, you tell me, who is the most beautiful woman in the world?

Don’t be scared! The original text is really like this, and there are references to this argument. The address of the reference is as follows: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_White

Do you understand? Use the entry [Snow White] in Wikipedia as a reference. (Fu Er …) Why did I see Snow White who ruined her childhood in the middle of a four major magazine references?

Each princess in the above picture has its own beauty.

With madness and bewilderment, we saw the end of the article.

Thanks to all the participants in this experiment, I hope my research can bring some fresh air and humor to the academic circle. Antoni Trilla (author 1) is a physician, while Antonio M Lacy (author 2) is a surgeon. They have spent 25 years in a happy marriage.

Antoni Trilla did not rate Antonio M Lacy’s appearance because she did not want to have any family problems during Christmas.

Well, I was wrong. At first I thought it was an academic paper, then I thought it was a funny and serious scientific paper, a surprise for readers from BMJ Christmas Special Issue! It was not until the end of the article that I realized that the four major periodicals can also be used to show love. I went to buy dog food…
