PICU’s impermanence and joy

I am a nurse, a PICU nurse.

PICU, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, I’m going to talk about some of the joys and sorrows I saw when I was a nurse in PICU.

PICU is much happier

Story 1: [I’m nursing]

Parents are not allowed to accompany the children in PICU, so the children’s eating, drinking, pulling and scattering are all under the care of the nurses. The younger children eat the milk prepared in the department, while the older children deliver meals from home or order meals in the canteen.

One night shift, WeChat notification in my pocket kept shaking, so I became angry and replied:

[Quiet! I’m feeding the baby! ]

All the gay friends who knew I had been single were shocked.

Story 2: Sister, I want you to hug

On another occasion, Guan Yi, an 8-year-old baby, was ready to be discharged from the hospital. Her physical condition was very energetic and vigorous. All kinds of pettish noises never stopped.

At first, I was patient. I let the water pour, the books turn over, and the stickers play with. At last, the baby said, “Auntie, I want to defecate, but that bedpan is very uncomfortable. Please hold me to defecate.”

My heart sank! Your 18-year-old baby, do you know how many pounds you weigh when I am Superman’s arm and let me pee with excrement? Why don’t you pinch the sky?

In the end, of course, I still couldn’t hold her. For the sake of my weak arms, I still put her directly on the bedpan: [relieve my big hands by myself! Call me when you’re done.]

Story 3: Since ancient times, sparrow saints have emerged as teenagers.

One day, Guan a 13-year-old baby, after her condition improved, was bored in the ward, so her parents sent in a pad to relieve her boredom. He kept playing with the pad.

I asked: Are you playing what?

He replied: playing mahjong ~

I am surprised: you can play mahjong at such a young age! (God, I learned to play mahjong only after graduating from college. What is awesome for young people! )

He smiled: I can’t play mahjong ~

I stay: Then how do you play?

He said: Be messy ~

So I watched him mess up at random, Hu one after another, and sighed with emotion: since ancient times, sparrow saints have emerged as teenagers…

Story 4: Ward Friendship

In order to make the children not so boring, the department has three portable DVD players and bought a bunch of animation discs. However, due to the large gap between beds and the small DVD display screen, a machine can only be shown to one baby. Generally, there are more than three babies who want to watch animation, so they have to be coaxed to take turns to watch it.

This day, a boy is watching Altman. A girl wants to take a break.

The nurse who cared about the girl ran over to the boy and said, “Brother ~ there is a sister who wants to watch cartoons on your DVD. Can you let her watch them?” ]

The boy was very heroic and waved his small hand: “Take it.”

Therefore, until she was discharged from the hospital, the girl had to greet and say hello to the boy through the bed nurse every day.

Well, being young is good.

Story 5: Uncle, you sleep with me

There is a male nurse in the department who is as tall as a cow and as big as a horse. He is called Dashuai.

One night shift. A 6-year-old girl who had just been admitted to hospital was afraid of getting dark and could not sleep, so she said to him in pettish manner:

[Uncle, I’m afraid, you hold me and sleep with me.]

The commander-in-chief was moved to tears and tears like rain. He learned from TV and said-

[I can’t do it! ]

PICU is capricious

Although there is much joy, there is also much sorrow of parting.

In PICU, you can’t imagine that a child’s illness can be as complicated as what’s and develop rapidly as what’s.

I don’t remember how many children were rushed into direct cardiopulmonary resuscitation and were pronounced dead after several hours of pressing. I also don’t remember how many children had sudden apnea or sudden heart rate drop at night and had emergency intubation. What’s more, I don’t remember how many children did not get better on the computer (ventilator) for several days, and their families had no choice but to give up.

Here, no child has only one diagnosis: children with congenital heart disease are often complicated with severe pneumonia and hyperlactemia; Septic children are often caused by pneumonia or meningitis infection. Children with leukemia will suffer from serious infection due to low immunity.

The most impressive, It was a baby with respiratory failure. It was the night shift on the first day of the new year. I am in charge of three children. Her breathing has been unstable, which is the most disturbing one. I will never leave her monitor for five seconds in the first half of the night. When I do airway lavage for the baby beside me, I am trembling with fear. I am afraid that I did not pay attention to it and did not find it in time when my vital signs fluctuated.

After evaluating, I felt that the child’s hood oxygen inhalation could not completely relieve the symptoms of dyspnea, so I informed the doctor to check by the bed: Doctor, the child breathed too fast and could not stabilize, and might have to get on the computer.

At that time, doctors were busy doing cardiopulmonary resuscitation for another baby with cardiac arrest. They looked at the blood gas report and said, “It can be stabilized. There is no indication for mechanical ventilation. We will talk about it during the day tomorrow.”

Because there were not enough people on the night shift, Eva’s pulse oxygen was indeed stable, and we all agreed to observe first.

However, at 4: 30 a.m., the baby’s pulse oxygen heart rate suddenly collapsed, and I immediately informed the doctor to intubate.

After getting on the ventilator, the data of the monitor was much more pleasing to the eye, and Eva’s breathing was smooth. She passed the dangerous night smoothly.

This kind of situation is actually very common in PICU, but why do I have the deepest impression on her?

Because, that night, another rescued child did not have such good luck. The child’s parents cried for a long time, but the miracle did not happen. The child, the night before, was still playing games happily.

The world is changeable and life is precious. May you and I be treated gently by this world.
