How to Read Picture Books

STEP 1 Tell a Story

The picture book depicts a series of processes such as mother and Po buying mung beans, cooking mung beans and eating mung beans as an ordinary story to tell children. This picture book has relatively few words, so parents may not be able to tell a complete story if they read the words according to the book. They can properly organize their own language so that children can better understand it.

Even if you don’t think it’s enough to speak it out, you can sing it out!

Step 2: Look at the pictures

Due to the lack of words, this picture book expresses and tells stories more through pictures. When parents read this picture book with their children, they can guide their children to observe the pictures carefully.

Don’t underestimate the children’s eyesight! We should know that children’s reading habits are different from those of adults. We often read words first when we open books, but we will ignore the pictures instead. Children are different, especially children in the younger age who originally know limited words. They often read a book through [looking at pictures]. Therefore, children can often find many details that we have not noticed.

For example:

[Baby, look, which shops did Po and his mother pass on their way home after buying mung beans? [(Bakery, Dry Goods Shop, Shoe Repair Shop)

[Hey, why did Po close one eye when washing mung beans? [There’s water spilling out.]

[Where are Po’s eyes looking at when eating? Why is he looking at it? [(Looking at the pot, because I want to eat mung beans)

… …

On the one hand, it can attract children’s attention and cultivate their concentration; On the other hand, it can also increase interaction with children and make the process of reading picture books more interesting.

3. Connect with life and practice

If some contents in the picture book can be linked to the real life of the babies, then the [magic] of a picture book can be better exerted! And < < Mom Buys Mung Beans > > is a picture book that comes from life and can return to life.

The picture book tells the process of Po and his mother buying green capital, washing mung beans, cooking mung beans, making mung bean ice and planting mung beans. You can take your children to do these things together!

Take your child to the supermarket or vegetable market, buy a bag of mung beans back, then wash and cook a pot of mung bean soup… In the process, you can let your child do what you can like Po, such as washing mung beans and finding a pot from the cupboard… (rest assured, the child will be happy to help).

Not only can children experience and participate in this process of “do it yourself, have plenty of food and clothing”, but you can also drink a bowl of cool and thirst-quenching mung bean soup together. Wouldn’t it be beautiful?

After eating mung bean soup, you can also take your children to try to make a few mung bean popsicles. Remember that your children must participate in this process. When children eat mung bean popsicles made by themselves, don’t mention how fulfilling they are!

What about the remaining mung beans? You can ask your child to pick out a few and plant them. Then let the child observe the process of a seed from breaking through the ground to growing into young seedlings to growing branches and leaves. Older children can also write observation notes with the help of their parents, combining pictures and texts to record the growth process of mung bean seeds. Experience and knowledge gained from observation of daily life will become a part of children’s own life and a nutrient for children’s growth.

How can summer heat be relieved in hot summer? How to spend the long summer vacation?

We might as well open this warm and delicate picture book with our children, walk into the story of Po and his mother, then cook a pot of mung beans and drink a bowl of cool mung bean soup together.
