The child was bitten by a dog, what should I do?

What should I do?

Step 1 Clean the wound

Rinse thoroughly with soapy water and flowing clear water for at least 15 minutes, then wash the wound with clear water or normal saline (0.9% sodium chloride solution).

Step 2 Disinfect the wound

After cleaning, dip the wound dry with clean cotton balls and disinfect it with iodophor or alcohol.

3. Vaccination against rabies

After being bitten by a dog, there is a certain chance of infection with rabies virus, so after simple treatment, you should go to the hospital in time for rabies vaccination.

If rabies vaccine has not been injected recently, the whole process of vaccination should be carried out according to the prescribed procedures (four or five needles, depending on the type of vaccine).

4. Prevention of tetanus

If the wound is deep, you should go to the hospital for regular debridement to prevent tetanus.

Common Mistakes

STEP 1 Suck the wound with your mouth

There are many bacteria in the oral cavity, so it is very easy to cause infection to contact the wound with the mouth.

2. About rabies vaccine

Although rabies vaccine is not required for every bite, don’t think that once vaccination, you will be immunized for life.

This vaccine is time-sensitive. Remember the time of the last rabies vaccine injection and let the doctor determine whether it needs to be injected again.

How to prevent it?

1. Don’t approach strange dogs at will, let alone play tricks on them at will.

2. No matter whose dog it is, don’t disturb them when they eat, sleep or take care of their cubs.

When playing with dogs, parents must supervise them.

4. Never take the initiative to attack, intimidate or tease strange dogs.
