What should children do if they eat or choke on foreign bodies and cannot breathe?

What should I do?

Step 1 Call 120 now

When the child chokes and cannot breathe, he should call 120 while preparing for rescue.

2. Heimlick first aid method

(1) Children over the age of 1

When the child is choked by a foreign body and cannot speak, one of the following methods can be adopted.

The rescuer knelt behind the child, hugged the child’s abdomen from behind, wrapped his arms around his waist and abdomen, clenched his fist with one hand, and pressed his fist heart inward against the child’s abdomen. Press the other hand on top of your fist, and press your hands in and out with great force. Repeat until the obstruction spits out. Let the child lie flat on the ground with his five fingers folded together and his palm root on his abdomen. Press quickly and hard until the foreign body spits out or the ambulance arrives.

(2) Children under 1 year of age

The following first aid methods are not applicable to the stage when the child still coughs or cries loudly after choking.

Take the back five times first: Parents or rescuers sit in chairs, Make the baby crawl on the leg, Facing the ground, one hand supports the head, neck and chest, and the other hand pats or presses the back. After pat the back five times, if the foreign body is not discharged, continue the following movements. Press the chest five times: Let the baby lie on his back, stabilize the baby’s head and neck with one hand, and quickly press the chest five times with two fingers of the other hand. The pressing depth should be 1/3 ~ 1/2 of the chest wall.

If the foreign matter is not discharged, please continue to repeat until the rescue arrives.

(3) Carry out cardiopulmonary resuscitation when necessary

When the child cannot wake up, cardiopulmonary resuscitation should be carried out immediately.

Common Mistakes

1. Use first aid when children cough or cry hard.

Hard cough and loud crying indicate that the respiratory tract is not completely blocked and foreign bodies may also be coughed up. Heimrick first aid should not be given immediately at this time. First aid should be given when the child cannot cough, speak or cry.

Step 2 Attempt to remove the foreign body stuck in the throat

When the child is awake, do not try to remove the foreign body from the child’s throat, which may push the foreign body deeper.

How to prevent it?

  1. Don’t laugh or talk to the child when he is eating.

  2. Educate children to chew and swallow slowly when eating.

  3. Don’t buy detachable toys for children under 3 years old.

  4. Keep batteries, coins and nuts out of reach of children.

  5. Children under 4 years old should avoid the following foods: hot dogs, nuts, lumps of meat and cheese, whole grapes, soft or hard candy, popcorn, chewing gum, etc.
